Setting The Record Straight - Biographical info from Brooks Peters, her step-grandson:

"Contrary to many written reports, the celebrated Ziegfeld Follies showgirl Jessie Reed was not married to Lew Reed, the blackface comedian. There were in fact two Jessie Reeds living and performing in New York at the same time in the 20s. One was a singer named Jessie Hyman who in 1915 had married Louis Nathan Herzberg, a vaudeville star with the United Booking Office (aka Lew Reed) and adopted the stage name Jessie Reed. She appears on some sheet music and toured in a vaudeville circuit as a singing "comedienne.""

"She claimed in one article I read to be the niece of Lady de Frece, aka the famous British "male impersonator" Vesta Tilley. She might well have been since her marriage certificate indicates that her mother was named "Ellie de Fries," which could have been a mistaken spelling for "de Frece." It's possible that Ellie was the sister of Lord William de Frece, Tilley's British husband, but I have not yet established a connection. This Jessie Reed may have even cut a few records, but she looked nothing like the ravishing, better-known Follies beauty."

"In 1925, this same Jessie Hyman married a manufacturer named Lew Herman, hence the confusing and contradictory misinformation in so many bios of Jessie Reed that claim the Ziegfeld star married either Lew Herman or Lou Herzberg. It was simply a case of mistaken identity by later biographers who didn't do their due diligence in the municipal archives! And the fact that Ziegfeld's Jessie Reed was first married to Oliver Debrow, another blackface comedian, obviously confused matters even more."

"I've been doing a lot of research into the Follies star Jessie Reed, who married my grandfather Leonard Minor Reno. If anyone has information on her they would like to share, I would be happy to receive an email through this site. Brooks Peters"

Thanks so much, Brooks!
